how we help

Hospital visits

The Branch provides a Hospital Visiting service at St Bernard’s Hospital, taking books and magazines to the patients on the wards. The service runs either once or twice each week, complementing the service provided by the League of Hospital Friends.

Volunteers are always needed to take the books and magazines round the wards, and we are always in need of new magazines. If you would like to volunteer to help on the wards, please contact our Welfare Officer on 20074452 or by email Any magazines can be left with the Hospital Reception or at the Red Cross office in the Convent.

The Visiting Service is really appreciated by the hospital patients, and our volunteers have found that they enjoy their visits and get a great deal of satisfaction from them.

Each Christmas the Red Cross also provides a small gift for everyone in hospital, in the two elderly care homes and in the Special Needs Centre, as well as others in the community who are in urgent need of support. This is managed in conjunction with the Police and other agencies which look after the disadvantaged.
