March / April are traditional months for sporting activities in Montserrat and sees Red Cross first aiders out in force. Over a four week period, the island becomes alive with sporting events to include a Primary Schools athletics meet, a Secondary School athletics meet, motorsports, a freedom run, basketball & cricket matches and around the island relay road race.

The Red Cross’s team of first aiders, some 24 strong, are busy providing first aid cover at all the events over this period of time. They were particularly engaged during the round the island relay road race at which they provided cover at each change over spot and also followed the runners around the route in their Red Cross vehicle.

This year, one runner collapsed as he handed over his baton to a team member after running a particularly gruelling part of the race and the Red Cross team was on the spot to help.

Over the course of a year the Red Cross First Aid team provides cover at over 25 public events.
